Just over a month ago I called the gal assigned to Kurt and
me as our licensor, Serena. She will be with us to the end when either we stop
doing foster care or she quits licensing families/homes for the state. I had waited several weeks for a call after
graduating from our foster class at the end of May, but when I heard nothing I called her. We were
able to schedule a Home Inspection for July 31st at 2pm. I was super
excited to have this last step in our licensing scheduled and on the calendar. Of
course we still had over a month to plan for it. Before my mind could really
focus on that event our backpacking and trek events pushed their way ahead.
We left to go backpacking the morning of July 15th
and got back the evening of July 20th. As soon as we got home and
put away our gear and equipment, my mind starting running in “Trek” mode. We
had a movie night the next evening to watch 17 Miracles with the youth and then
only had a few more days until we left for trek July 25th. When we
got back from Trek on the 28th I think my body was in termination
mode and Kurt and I had a good 12 hours of sleep that night.
Sunday morning I started making the switch to Inspection
mode. I knew a lot of cleaning and organizing would have to happen on Monday to
make it for the inspection Tuesday afternoon.
When I finally found our “In home study” check list I realized the
biggest obstacle would be to lock up our cleaning supplies, first aid and other
harmful chemicals. We have three options
of locks: key, combination or a magnetic lock. We choose the magnetic (Tot Lok)
lock since it’s pretty hidden.

Inspection Day
Serena arrived late to the house and the whole time I
worried she would call and cancel, but she had just gotten lost. She asked to
sit down with both of us and ask questions. Kurt and I took turns describing
our childhood, relationships with our families and our relationship with each other.
She complimented us on 4 fabulous reference letters that all spoke highly of us
and of course our dog Gooch. (Thanks to those that were asked to write letters
and for apparently the nice things you wrote.)
After about 2 hours of interview questions we began the “tour”
of the house.
I did not realize how many “keep out of the reach of
children” bottles we have in the house. We got everything inside the house
organized and locked away but we actually didn’t pass the inspection because of
the glues, paints, caulks and car oils/gas that are lining the shelves in the
garage. We’ll have to get some kind of lockable cabinet to house all of those.
When that's all taken care of Serena said we could just take a picture of that and send it to her.
Off to tackle that garage!
